TRINITY 6: Surplus to requirements?
God is eternally satisfied in the loving relationship of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. That’s we thought about in the last article. Thus it follows that we are not necessary to fulfill God’s existence. We are not created out of a desire to love something or someone, for God is not alone in eternity. He is one in three. At first, this may not seem like good news, it may leave us feeling surplus to requirements. In reality, it frees us. His love for us is not an expression of need that we must fulfill, but an overflow of his essence, his nature to go out from himself towards the other in love, interest and even praise. We do not have to warrant being loved by our efforts or our ‘lovableness factor’ – a great relief to me – we simply allow ourselves to be caught up into the song and dance of satisfaction and joy of the Trinity. For “God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ”. (Eph 2.4)
